French Quiz Wednesday

Image
French: I can learn vocabulary for things around the house Students, this is a reminder that you will have your last French Quiz on Wednesday. You are expected to know the House vocabulary we've been practicing in class. The Quiz will be a simple matching test. Below is the picture of the vocabulary you need to be comfortable with, in case you'd like to practice.  You will not need to know whether the items are masculine or feminine for the quiz.

French Animal Booklets

Image
French: I can develop vocabulary based on the theme: animals; I can practice pronunciation.  Over the past couple of months, we have been exploring Animal vocabulary in French. Some ways we have learned and practiced the vocabulary include: repeating vocab works with Ms Elder, searching out and recording the names of animals at the Zoo, playing BINGO, reading books, drawing mixed up animals on whiteboards and guessing each others' and worksheet games.  We have shown our learning through a French booklet. Each page has a picture of a mixed-up animal, and a sentence underneath describing its body parts. For example, this page by Rochael says,  My animal has the head of a bunny. My animal has the fin of a dolphin. My animal has the leg of a wolf. We each met with Ms Elder one-on-one to read her our booklet in both French (to check our pronunciation), and English (to check our understanding). Then, we went over our marks together. Today, we shared our French booklets with our...

Le Carnaval d'Hiver

Celebrating Carnaval with Bonhomme!   French: I can develop my French vocabulary; I can explore French Canadian cultural events. Winter Carnival (Carnaval d'Hiver) is a festival that happens every year that celebrates winter in Quebec City. Over the last couple of weeks in French class, we were working to whip up an amazing experience for the rest of the school. We split into different groups with different focuses to prepare to lead the school for Carnaval. Some groups were planning games, one group painted a Bonhomme mascot, one group wrote announcements to read to the school, and one group prepared a Google Slides presentation for the other teachers and classes.  Making the Instructions for Human Foosball The Making of Bonhomme Bonhomme ( bonhomme de neige means snow man in French) is the mascot of Carnaval. He wears a metis arrow sash ( fleche ) to honour the Indigenous people in the area. We watched a video on how to make them and it takes many hours. There are only a fe...

French Fashion Show

Image
French: I can learn vocabulary relating to clothing; I can speak in French with more accurate pronunciation  Today we showcased our learning in French by having our fashion show. We strutted our stuff around the classroom while a classmate read our scripts for us. We worked with Ms Elder earlier this week to mark our scripts together, then during the fashion show, Ms Elder marked our pronunciation of the vocabulary we've been practicing. Our marks will go home on Monday.  Many kids said it was so much fun to see the creativity in outfits and to model for the class. :) We learned lots of clothing vocabulary words. We also learned how the French language has gendered items and you need to change the gender of the colour (ex: bleu -> bleue if the object is feminine). The same for plural words (more than one), where you add an 's'.  We continued our pronunciation work that we started at Halloween. We know that words that end in an 's' or 't' have silent lette...

Les Vetements

French: I can learn vocabulary relating to clothing; I can speak in French with increasingly accurate pronunciation.  We are practicing clothing vocabulary in French in preparation for the Fashion Show ( for more information, see our previous post - click here ).   Today, Ms Elder put us into partners. We sorted these vocabulary words into two piles: colours and clothing words. Then, we drew a person in our journals. We took turns pulling out two slips. Then, we drew the clothing that we picked on to our person and coloured it. We then had to label 5 items and their colours to practice for the fashion show. "I liked being able to pick a random clothing and item and colour and see what it looks like at the end."~ Callie "I liked how we could see other people's creations and let them see ours so we can figure out their French words." ~ Dillon "I liked this activity because it wasn't just a worksheet. It was an activity that was fun." ~ Sadie "I ...

Remembrance Day

Image
A big thank you to everyone who sent in food bank donations for the veterans! The class did a fantastic job sharing today during the virtual assembly. I posted the song they learned in Music to the Google Classroom so you can see it. They also learned and shared live a French poem called "Brave Soldats."  I hope you have a peaceful Remembrance Day tomorrow and a rejuvenating PD Day on Friday. I'll see the students back on Monday! ~ Ms Elder

French Folk Songs

Image
French: I can develop my French vocabulary and pronunciation; I can develop an understanding of the French culture. For the past couple of weeks, we have been learning the vocabulary for trees in French to coincide with our learning of plants in Science. We read stories, reviewed vocabulary, and learned the lyrics to the classic Quebecois folk song, L'Arbre Est Dans Ses Feuilles . We have learned about wooden spoons and how to play them, as well as some cultural connections to Quebec. It had been our plan to videotape us singing the song and playing the spoons but due to technical challenges, this sadly could not happen.  Instead, we can sing the song for you at home! If you're interested, here are some of the videos we watched as a class:  How to Play the Spoons from the National Music Centre Spoon Playing and Quebecois Culture The Song: L'Arbre Est Dans Ses Feuilles

French: I can learn the vocabulary for numbers and school supplies; I can read familiar words. Over the past couple of weeks, we have been working on booklets that use the vocabulary we're learning in French: school supplies and numbers. We are taking these home today, along with our self-assessment and Ms Elder's assessment. We can read these books for you to celebrate our learning! "I learned that we should re-read our work to make sure everything is right." ~ Dillon "I liked writing in French." ~ Lawrence "I really liked drawing the pictures." ~ Maria "I liked everything about this assignment." ~ Callie "I liked writing in French to improve my skills writing in a different language." ~ Sadie "I learned that some words are not similar between French and English, like water bottle." ~ Sebastian K
