The "Big Ball"

Image
PE: I can explore a variety of movement and equipment; I can cooperate to demonstrate fair play and teamwork  This week we were introduced to a new piece of gym equipment: the Big Ball!  This 8 foot beach ball was tougher to control than we expected. We've tried two games so far: one cooperative class game where we tried to keep it off the floor and one team game where we had to get it around the gym quickly without knocking over any pylons. We'll explore more with it next week.

Outdoor School

"I liked when we did the tug-of-war because it was with an actual rope, not a skipping rope, and it was fun because we weren't doing it on concrete so if we fell it didn't hurt." ~ Callie Lost Letters game "Kamp Kiwanis was fun because they literally let us run around in the woods. The Energy Game was really fun. We had 3 lives." ~ Lillian "I liked archery because it was super fun being able to express your emotions trying to shoot the targets. It was super fun being able to do that." ~ Seb K "I liked archery a lot because we got the freedom of shooting things at target. It wasn't at all like the idea I had in my mind where we all got our own $200 bows. It was a lot of fun but I wished we got more turns." ~ Lawrence "I thought the Energy Game was really fun because you got to go out into the wild and experience being an animal or a plant or a hurricane." ~ Hazel "I thought the Energy Game was really fun because at first...

Gaga Ball

Image
PE: I can explore a variety of movements and equipment; I can practice fair play The school purchased a Gaga Ball pit! We learned the rules from our Student Council members: Hazel, Jane, and Maria. We tried out the new equipment and we loved it!  Next week, we will explore different variations of the game like competitive one-on-one, competitive team, for-fun practice (1 in, 1 out), and maybe more!  We realized we have space on the other side of the gym we can use, too, for free time with equipment while we're waiting for our turn. :) We learned that hitting a Gaga ball feels different from hitting other balls. It's heavier. We connected it to Dodgeball because the rules are similar.

Simple Machines in the Body

Image
This week, we watched a presentation that was shared with us by Sebastian K's mom. We learned that our body parts are levers and pulleys. The levers are our bones and the pulleys are our muscles. The presentation is used with university students but there were lots of vocabulary words we knew like, first, second, and third class levers ! Then, we went into the gym to test out the simple machines in our bodies!  We had a couple of different stations in the gym. One had wiffle balls, scoops, and lacrosse sticks. We tried throwing the balls, using the scoops, and using the lacrosse sticks to see which would go farther with the same amount of effort. The other station had hockey sticks, mini hockey sticks, and pucks. We discovered that the longer the lever, the less effort is needed but more distance it needs to travel.  "This was really fun because we got to test out the simple machines in our bodies!" ~ Callie "It was really hard to use the small hockey sticks beca...

Tennis!

Image
This week in our class, we learned a new sport called Tennis. We had a fantastic coach who we nicknamed, Terrific Tennis Tyler. :)  Tyler taught us different skills like how to hold the racket, how to turn our body when the ball is approaching, and how to hit it softly over the net. "I learned in tennis how to do the forehand and backhand swings." ~ Sadie "I learned a couple of new practice drills." ~ James "It was fun to learn tennis because I didn't know how to do it and now I know." ~ Callie "It was very hard balancing the ball on the tennis racket. I learned that tennis is a lot like badminton." ~ Lillian "I think tennis was really fun and I used to be horrible at tennis and now I'm a little bit better." ~ Lawrence  "We played a really fun game that was like line tag but you had to balance your tennis ball on your racket." ~ Vance "I liked all the games we learned and played. I think they were really fun and t...

Fun in the Snow!

Image
Physical Education: I can explore ways to lead an active, healthy life We took advantage of the fresh snow and had a free play outside for Gym yesterday. Here are some of our creations.

The Changing Colours of Fall

Image
Science: I can observe and connect with nature; I can reflect on observations, notice changes & patterns. Art: I can create realistic drawings. I can explore colour. Yesterday, we went on a Community Walk so that we could learn about and capture the fall colours through art. On the walk, we saw Canadian geese, a magpie nest, a chickadee, a northern flicker (and some dinosaurs!).  "On some of the trees, some of the leaves were still changing colours. On the same tree, we saw yellow and green." ~ Rochael "On the leaves, when the leaves start to turn red or yellow, they start on the outside." ~ Sebastian K "I realized that when the leaves start to change colour, the top left of the tree was yellow and other parts were still green." ~ Dillon "Some leaves that I found were kind of looking like a tree that was set on fire." ~ Sebastian C "When I was walking, I noticed that some trees had almost lost all of their leaves." ~ Callie "...

Cooperative Games

Image
PE: I can cooperate with others and demonstrate teamwork.  In Gym class these last few weeks, we have been working on Cooperative Games. We did a hula hoop challenge where we had to get our team from one end of the compound and back stepping only inside the hula hoops. We also navigated a "blindfolded" classmate through a course full of pylons by only giving them oral instructions. Then, we worked silently with a team to re-arrange ourselves teetering on the wall behind the school. None of the games were a RACE, they were all challenges. Now, we are creating and leading our own Cooperative Game in groups for the class.  "My favourite thing about this was playing fun things made by awesome people, like llama tag." ~ Iggy "It was very hard to think of a cooperative game. My group took 2-3 days to think of one." ~ Lawrence "I liked making up a game and then getting to play other people's made-up or real games that I didn't know of."~ Hazel ...
