Time Capsule Opening!

Opening the letter (Time Capsule is in the bottom right corner)

SS: I can ask questions and take steps to gather information; SS: I can explore first-hand artifacts; SS: I can learn about and appreciate our past and think about the legacy we leave

Here, you can see one of our lucky students
is opening a letter addressed: "Open in the
Year 2022"!
Yesterday, we were given an exciting gift: a Time Capsule from 25 years ago! It was gifted to our school by a former teacher: Ms Kruk. Her class made the time capsule in the school year 1996-1997. Each student from her class put an artifact that they had that was valuable to them into the time capsule. There are also special donations from other important people like a police badge, a letter from the Mayor, a letter from Alberta's Premier from the time, Ralph Klein, and a letter from the Prime Minister, Jean Chretien. There were 70 objects in the time capsule altogether.

They were very cool objects that are unique and like treasure, such as a class photo album, a Trans-Canada trail badge showing there is a Ramsay School marker on the trail, maps, a poster of the Calgary Flames coaches and players from that year, a Stampeders media guide signed by the coaches and team, a mini-record (45) with Calgary's city song, and many more items.

The box itself is beautifully decorated. On each side, the box is painted to show Calgary's past, present and future. The class photo from 1996-1997 was on top. (See the photo above). We noticed that Calgary looks very different now, as well as Ramsay School.

Here are some pictures of us exploring the artifacts:

Questions/Predictions
"I wonder if they were reluctant to put items in the box since they were so valuable to them." ~ Oscar
"One of my predictions was that there would be the old chalk and chalkboard eraser. It turned out that there was none of that. Most of the stuff was sports-related." ~ Iggy
"I wonder why each person put in that item for that special reason." ~ Callie
"I wonder what's on the VHS tapes!" ~ Lillian
"I wonder if some of the kids or teacher are still alive." ~ Dillon
"VHS tapes!!!" ~ Seb C
"I wonder why they made the time capsule and why they chose the year 2022 to open it. I also want to thank whoever chose the year 2022 so we were the ones to open it!" ~ Seb K
"I wonder how the people who made it are feeling since they know it's 2022." ~ Lillian
"I wonder what it would be like if we got to time travel back in time to 1996 and see what the kids expressions were." ~ Iggy
"What do VCR and VHS stand for?" ~ Lawrence

Next Steps
  • Figure out how to hook a VCR up to the Smartboard so we can watch the VHS tapes
  • Research some of the artifacts to learn more about them
  • Look up the value of some of the items (like the autographed ones) to see their worth
  • Explore more of the artifacts (there are A LOT)
  • Think about our own contribution to the future of Calgary (in connection with our upcoming field trip) and create our own Legacy Project

If there are any parents who have a slide projector, please let us know. We'd love to borrow it to view the slides we were given!
